Free Crochet Hat Pattern With Embellishment Options

Brunch Beanie

I wanted to offer a free crochet hat pattern to my readers, so I spent some time working up this pattern and design. I had to do a few iterations before I was satisfied with the final hat.

I sent my kids a picture of the finished hat to have them help me determine what to name this free crochet hat pattern. Han Jovi is the one that came up with the name, because he said he could see Bubbles wearing this beanie to have brunch with me.

The Brunch Beanie Free Crochet Hat Pattern

This pattern is written using US crochet terminology

You will need to know how to chain, slip stitch, single crochet and half double crochet.

Supplies:

  • worsted weight yarn, approximately 3oz for the hat, either size
  • size H hook for child size and size I hook for adult size
  • scraps of yarn or floss for the embellishment as desired
  • darning needle for embroidery embellishment

Note: chain at beginning of each round does not count as a stitch

Use hook size as specified above. The child size is approximately 19 inches and the adult is approximately 22 inches. You may need to adjust your hook size depending on your tension.

My gauge using the I hook in 11 hdc = 4″ and 10 hdc rows = 4″

Round 1 – make 12 hdc ( UK term is half treble) in a magic circle or adjustable circle. (there is a great video here) Alternately you can begin with chaining 8 stitches and joining them to make a round and then do 12 hdc in the circle. Regardless of method, after 12th hdc join with a slip stitch in the top of the first hdc. (12 stitches)

Round 2 – chain one, 2hdc in same stitch, then 2hdc in each stitch around, join with slip stitch in the top of the first hdc (24 stitches)

Round 3 – chain one, hdc in same stitch then 2hdc in next stitch, *hdc in next stitch then 2hdc in next stitch*. Repeat from * to * to the end of the round, join with slip stitch in the top of the first hdc (36 stitches)

Round 4 – chain one, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next stitch then 2hdc in the third stitch , *hdc in next stitch then 2hdc in next 2 stitches*. Repeat from * to * to the end of the round, join with slip stitch in the top of the first hdc (48 stitches)

Round 5- chain one, hdc in same stitch, hdc in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch in the top od the first hdc (48 stitches)

Round 6 – chain one, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches then 2hdc in the third stitch , *hdc in next stitch then 2hdc in next 3 stitches*. Repeat from * to * to the end of the round, join with slip stitch in the top of the first hdc (60 stitches)

Round 7 – chain one, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 3 stitches, then 2hdc in the third stitch , *hdc in next stitch then 2hdc in next 4 stitches*. Repeat from * to * to the end of the round, join with slip stitch in the top of the first hdc (72 stitches)

Adult Size:

Rounds 8-20 – chain one, hdc in same stitch, hdc in each stitch around, join with slip stitch in the top of the first hdc (72 stitches)

Rounds 21-24 – chain one, sc ( UK term is double crochet) in same stitch and then sc in back loop only of every stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the first sc.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Child size:

Rounds 8-18 – chain one, hdc in same stitch, hdc in each stitch around, join with slip stitch in the top of the first hdc (72 stitches)

Rounds 19-22 – chain one, sc ( UK term is double crochet) in same stitch and then sc in back loop only of every stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the first sc.

Finish off and weave in ends.

The adult version shown above was made with Big Twist in Eggplant. The daisies are spaced roughly 3 and a half inches apart around the hat. I just used some scraps of DK yarn that I had.

The child’s version is made with Lion Brand’s Basic Stitch in the Slate colorway. I used scraps of worsted weight yarn to embroider the flowers on the side of it. The yarn was doubled and I really did not like how it turned out.
