What can a beginner knit? Of course the answer is anything they want! With patience and a willingness to rip it apart and start over (“frog” it) multiple times even complex projects can be knit by beginners. But for most beginners that is a process that would lead to discouragement. What are the questions to ask that will help you decide where to begin? And what are a few pattern or project characteristics that will lead to knitting enjoyment and success.
Are you a true beginner who is picking up knitting needles for the first time? Or have you dabbled in this fantastic art form before?
If this will be your very first knitting project it is best to knit something that involves a minimal number of skills. A knitting project that involves only casting on, the knit stitch and casting off.
Here are a few to try:
I knit these slippers recently. Super simple and very comfortable. She has the pattern in baby bootie size as well. The baby booties are great for using up leftover yarn. When I have a bunch made I just take them to our local WIC office.
Ready to try some basic shaping? Still only knit stitch, no purling yet.
Maybe you feel ready to add the purl stitch to your skills. These projects aree great ones for refining your work. The combine the garter stitch (all knit rows) the stockingette stitch (knit 1 row, purl the next row and simple ribbing or seed stitched items where knit and purl stitches are alternated throughout the row. (don’t worry, all the ones here are really straightforward, no complicated patterns)
So Now….What Can A Beginner Knit?!?
A beginner should always start with a project that excites them. When I am asked what a beginner can or should knot my recommendations are to choose something you WANT to make that fits your current skill set as closely as possible. Are you the type of person who wants a quick win in order to motivate yourself? Take that into consideration as well. Above all, don’t give up! Knitting is a skill that is worth learning and that will bring you so much joy. What can a beginner knit? What CAN’T a beginner knit?
